Discipline in Motion: Annie’s Nursing Journey from Africa to Austria

Discipline in Motion: Annie’s Nursing Journey from Africa to Austria.

Meet Annie, a determined and passionate nurse embarking on an exciting journey to

Austria. In just a few weeks, she’ll be heading to Tirol through a partnership between

Lebenshilfe Tirol and Mount Kenya University. Annie's story is one of resilience, ambition,

and the desire to grow both personally and professionally. From helping people living

with HIV in her home country to taking on a new chapter in Austria, she’s ready for the

challenges that lie ahead. We sat down with Annie to learn more about her journey, her

excitement for the future, and the little things she’ll miss about Africa.

The Beginning of Annie’s Nursing Journey

Q: What inspired you to become a nurse?

Annie’s passion for nursing came from a deep-rooted desire to help people. Her work with individuals living with HIV has been especially impactful, as she’s been able to assist both children and adults in need of care. “It’s a great line of work that allows you to make a real difference in people’s lives,” Annie shares. For her, it’s not just about the job—it’s about the lives she touches every day.

Q: Can you share a bit about your nursing experience in Africa?

Annie began her nursing career just two years ago at a clinic specializing in antiretroviral treatment for children and adults. During this time, she’s honed her skills in patient communication, counseling, and providing comprehensive care. “I’ve learned so much in these two years. It’s not just about treating illnesses; it’s about understanding and supporting patients emotionally,” she says. My favourite department is ER.

The Call to Austria: A New Chapter

Q: What made you decide to move to Austria for work?

For Annie, the move to Austria represents an opportunity to expand her knowledge and skills in a completely different environment. “I’m excited about the new experiences, especially the chance to learn more in my nursing career. What I learn there, I can bring back home and use to make a difference,” Annie explains. It’s a chance to grow and experience a new healthcare system, one that she’s eager to explore.

Q: How did you hear about this opportunity?

It was her classmate who first introduced Annie to the life-changing opportunity. “They mentioned a program that offered the chance to learn German and work abroad, so I immediately got involved,” she recalls. From there, Annie joined a German language group and began preparing for the next steps in the process.

Q: What was your first reaction when you got accepted for the job?

When she first received the news, Annie admits she was a little skeptical. “I wasn’t sure if it was true, but I was determined to keep going. I continued with my German lessons, and as I saw other candidates already in Austria, I realized this was real,” she says with a smile.

Q: What did you like about the process and what do you think can be changed or made better?

Annie feels the process has been fairly smooth, with good communication throughout.

Professional Growth & Cultural Adaptation

Q: How do you think nursing in Austria will be different from nursing in Africa?

Annie anticipates many differences, especially in the types of cases and the population she will serve. “The practices will be similar, but I’ll be encountering different healthcare challenges. I’m excited to observe, adapt, and share my experiences when I return home,” she explains.

Q: What are you most excited about in terms of your professional growth in Austria?

For Annie, the top priority is learning. “I’m excited to learn new things—new techniques, new language, new practices. I’m also eager to continue my education and aim for a higher level of specialization in my field,” she says.

Q: Have you faced any challenges in preparing for the move? (e.g., language, paperwork, culture shock)

The language barrier has been one of the biggest challenges. “It was tough because not many people speak German in my community, but I was determined to learn. I used classes, music, and movies to help me,” she shares. Despite the challenge, Annie’s persistence is paying off, and she’s ready to embrace the German language.

Q: How are you preparing for the German language requirement?

Annie admits that speaking German is not easy, especially with fewer opportunities to practice it in Africa. But she’s taken a proactive approach by immersing herself in the language. “I listen to German music and watch movies in German. It’s been helpful,” she explains.

Personal Fun: From Africa to Austria

Q: Have you ever experienced snow before? Are you ready for the cold?

This will be Annie’s first time experiencing snow, and she’s excited, though a little nervous. “I’ve never seen snow before, so I’m really looking forward to it. I’m definitely stocking up on jackets and warm clothes!” she laughs.

Q: What’s one African dish you can’t live without, and do you think you’ll find it in Austria?

Annie’s favorite dish is fries (potatoes), and she’s hopeful she’ll find something similar in Austria. However, she’s aware she might miss the distinct spices and flavors of African food. “I love the spices we use in Africa, so I think I’ll miss that the most,” she admits.

Q: What’s a fun fact about yourself that most people don’t know?

Here’s a fun side of Annie: “I love watching movies. I could watch them all day and night if I could,” she says with a smile.

Q: If you could take one thing from Africa with you (besides family), what would it be?

Annie quickly answers: “My boyfriend!” A small but sweet reminder of what she’s leaving behind as she embarks on her new journey.

Q: Do you have a favorite Austrian food or drink you’re excited to try?

“I’m not sure yet, but I’m excited to try anything that looks enticing. I love discovering new foods,” Annie says, with a sense of curiosity.

Hopes & Aspirations for the Future

Q: Where do you see yourself in five years in your nursing career?

Looking ahead, Annie has big plans. “In five years, I want to have upgraded my degree to the master’s level and specialize in a particular field of nursing. I’m determined to reach new heights,” she shares confidently.

Q: What message would you give to other African nurses considering working abroad?

Her advice is simple but powerful: “The sky’s the limit! There are many opportunities for nurses abroad, and it will be beneficial for your career and personal growth. Just stay persistent, learn the language, and make sure your paperwork is in order.”

Q: How do you plan to stay connected to your African roots while in Austria?

Annie is committed to staying connected to her heritage. “I’ll cook traditional dishes for my colleagues, teach them traditional dance, and keep in touch with my family through video calls,” she says. It’s a beautiful way to stay grounded while exploring a new world.

Q: What’s the one thing you’ll miss the most about Africa?

For Annie, it’s the spices, her family, and the life she’s built in Africa. “This is my first time traveling abroad, and I’ll miss everything—especially my family and friends,” she reflects.

Q: If you could describe your upcoming journey in one word, what would it be?

“Discipline,” Annie says, as she prepares for this new chapter. It’s a word that embodies the hard work, commitment, and resilience she’s shown throughout her journey.

Annie’s journey is just beginning, but she’s already ready to embrace the challenges, opportunities, and experiences that await her in Austria. For African nurses dreaming of expanding their horizons, Annie’s story serves as an inspiring reminder that with determination, persistence, and a little bit of adventure, the world is truly within reach.
