From Dream to Departure: Leah’s Inspiring Nursing Journey to Austria
What does it take to turn a childhood dream into an international career opportunity? For Leah, a determined young nurse, it took passion, perseverance, and the right guidance. Today, as she prepares to board her flight to Austria, Leah shares her journey. The journey is from studying nursing at Mount Kenya University to learning German and working closely with TYE Pathways.

A Childhood Dream, A Lifelong Calling
Leah always knew she wanted to work in healthcare. As a child, she was frequently unwell and spent much of her time in hospitals. “My family would always say, ‘You’ll grow up and become a medic,’” she recalls fondly. Their encouragement planted the seed that would grow into her nursing career.
In 2019, Leah was placed by KUCCPS to study nursing at Mount Kenya University. “It was a dream come true,” she says. She completed her Bachelor’s in Nursing in 2023.

The Spark: “I Heard About Austria…”
While still in university, Leah and her classmates would often chat about life after graduation. “That’s when we first heard rumors about the Austria opportunity,” she says. At the time, it seemed distant and uncertain, but curiosity led to research, and eventually, confirmation that the opportunity was real.
After graduation, Leah’s friend stayed behind at the university and began investigating the opportunity further. When she confirmed that it was legitimate, they decided to pursue it together.

Learning German and Finding TYE
Even before discovering TYE, Leah took a bold step: She enrolled in German language classes to prepare for the journey abroad.
Later, during the application and documentation stage, Leah was introduced to TYE Pathways and her advisor, Mag. Rose Barasa. “That’s when we really started learning what was involved. Mag. Rose Barasa guided us through every step, paperwork, training, and answering all our questions,” Leah says.
She also took part in a comprehensive pre-departure training by TYE. “It helped a lot. We felt prepared and confident.”

Clinical Experience in Kenya
Before heading abroad, Leah gained hands-on experience in various healthcare settings. She trained at:
- Kikuyu Hospital for general nursing practice
- Mathare National Hospital for psychiatric rotations
- Iddle Daniel Hospital for community-level care
- Mukuru County Teaching & Referral Hospital during her internship
This experience not only solidified her clinical skills but also reinforced her passion for nursing.

Ready for Takeoff: Leah’s Expectations
Now with her flight booked, Leah is looking forward to life in Austria. “I’m so excited,” she says. “I want to grow professionally, travel, and even learn how to cook different meals!”
But beyond the personal growth, Leah is eager to immerse herself in Austria’s advanced healthcare system. “The technology, professionalism, and pay are on a different level,” she explains.

Lessons, Challenges & Advice
The road hasn’t been without challenges. Learning German was tough, especially the vocabulary, but Leah found the process rewarding. “It’s exciting to learn a new language. I just wish I practiced speaking more,” she reflects.
She encourages other aspiring nurses to remain committed:
“Don’t give up. Take it seriously and stick to it.”
When asked what surprised her most about the process, Leah says, “The time. I thought it would be faster. But it’s been worth the wait.”

Leah knows not everyone’s journey looks the same. Some of her friends used different routes to go abroad and the experience wasn’t always smooth.
“Some had to follow up everything on their own, and there was no clear communication. With TYE, everything was organized and supportive. Plus, we’re getting part of our fees back, which is a huge relief,” she shares.
